BALA ALBACORE SAILOR COMPETES IN TORONTO
by Jacqueline Lawrence
A local member of the Bala Sailing Club will be hitting the waters of Lake Ontario this weekend at the 2005 Canadian Albacore Championship Regatta. Adam Nicholson, 19, will be participating in the Canadian Albacore Championship Sept. 23 to 25, in Toronto. The national event, hosted by the Canadian Albacore Association, pits some of Canada's most talented Albacore sailors against each other.
Nicholson, who has been with the Bala Sailing CLub for the past five years, said he is looking forward to the event. "There will be some stiff competition this year," said Nicholson. "But I am hoping to place in the top 10." According to Nicholson, his passion for sailing began when he was just seven years old. "I learned to sail at the Kettles Sailing CLub," said the Mortimer's Point native. "At the time, they didn't allow anyone under 10 into the sailing course, just because of the swimming ability." The club, however, made an exception, he said.
From that point on, Nicholson said he focused on the sport with a fierce determination. Several recent wins have made him all the more determined, he explained.
Nicholson recently took the junior cup at the Albacore Internation Regatta, held Sept 2 to 9 in Lyme Regis, England. In another amazing feat, he also placed 27th out of 75 boats in the general sailing competition. "Some of those guys have been sailing for 25 years," said Nicholson, "so I was really happy with 27."
Nicholson said he plans on sailing his spare Albacore at this weekend's Canadian competition. He is still waiting for his main boat to be shipped back following the Lyme Regis regatta, he said.
Congratulations to Ayton Grady and Kathy Worth and to Bruce Dempster and Will Dempster who tied in a dead heat for the Brent Trophy in this year's standings in the Bala Sailing Club. The team of Jim Thomas and Andy Durnford came in third in the standings.
Hello sailors! We are the Bala Sailing Club, sailing out of the beautiful, friendly town of Bala on Lake Muskoka in Ontario, Canada. We sail Albacores mostly, with a few Lasers and other sailboats occasionally. Every Saturday during the summer (Sunday on the August long weekend), we race in either Bala Bay or Dudley Bay, with sailors coming from as far away as North Bay and Cleaver Bay on Lake Muskoka for the races. Come join us, for one trial race or for the season (only $40 for family membership); we’d love to have you!
